Belgian Minister Accuses US of ‘Ideological Attack’ on Europe’s Social Model
Speaking in Paris at a conference on European healthcare policy, Vandenbroucke responded to criticism from Donald Trump that European countries spend too little on pharmaceutical research while benefiting from lower medicine prices.
While acknowledging that the US invests more in research and development, Vandenbroucke argued that the disparity is largely driven by high profit margins captured by private intermediaries. He also called on the European Union to take a firmer stance when Washington threatens tariffs against EU member states. “The European Union is a protective shield against bilateral intimidation. We should make this much clearer to our citizens,” he said.
The remarks followed criticism from Bill White, who accused Belgium of antisemitism over the prosecution of three Jewish ritual circumcisers in Antwerp. Posting on X, White described the case as “ABSOLUTELY an issue of antisemitism” and called Vandenbroucke “very rude,” alleging he disliked the US president.
In response, Maxime Prevot summoned the ambassador, labeling his remarks “unacceptable.”
