111 Syrians Voluntarily Head Back Home from Belgium

(MENAFN) Official Belgian data released Friday revealed that 111 Syrians have voluntarily returned to Syria since the start of 2025, marking a noticeable shift following the collapse of the Assad regime in late 2024.

The trend of repatriation among Syrians residing in Belgium is expected to persist into next year, according to Belga, which cited figures from Belgium’s asylum agency, Fedasil.

Since the ousting of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, a total of 111 Syrians have returned to their homeland. Additionally, 18 individuals have booked flights, while another 16 have expressed interest in returning.

Just one day after Assad’s regime fell, Belgian authorities moved to temporarily halt the processing of Syrian asylum applications until the end of December 2024.

While discussions on whether to prolong the suspension are expected to begin soon, the report noted that it remains uncertain if Syrian asylum requests will resume in August.

In 2023, Syrians made up a significant portion of asylum seekers in Belgium. Out of 12,355 total applicants, 2,682 were of Syrian origin.
